From “Shaky Knees” to Confident Grandpa: How Randy Got Back to Moving, Playing, and Living Without Limits

The Story of a 65-Year-Old Grandfather Who Rebuilt Strength, Flexibility, and Confidence

Randy had done his best to stay active. But after tearing both menisci and an ACL, his knees felt... unstable. He called them “shaky.” That’s no small issue when you’re trying to keep up with a 10-month-old granddaughter, or hike and bike with your wife on the weekends.

He had already discovered the knees-over-toes world and was trying exercises on his own. But that came with risk and his wife, Sherry, encouraged him to find help.

“Maybe we should just get a trainer so you don’t mess yourself up,” - Sherry

That suggestion changed everything.

The Problem: Injuries That Made Movement Feel Risky

Randy’s knees had taken a beating over the years. ACL and meniscus tears had left him hesitant and unsure on his feet. Even though he wanted to stay active, the idea of certain movements, especially full knee bend, felt unattainable and dangerous.

He wasn’t afraid of effort. He was worried of doing the wrong thing and making things worse.

The Turning Point: From DIY to “Let’s Get Serious”

He had already started doing knees-over-toes exercises at the gym. But without direction, it felt like walking a tightrope.

That’s when his wife encouraged him to find a coach. Someone who could guide the process. Someone who actually knew how to guide him through the system to rebuild strength and protect the joints, not just follow short videos online.

They found me through the ATG coaches map, and we got started right away.

The Method: Training for Structural Balance, Not Fitness

We focused on rebuilding strength through structure—emphasizing split squats, VMO squats, and true mobility training that didn’t just work the visible muscles but addressed compensations and imbalances head-on.

What stood out to Randy wasn’t just the exercises, but how we did them:

“You always explain what muscles we’re targeting. You show me exactly how to do it. And you teach the little things that most people overlook.”

We trained smarter to focus on his body specifically and that changed everything.

The Results: Stability, Strength, and Real-World Wins

Here’s what shifted for Randy:

  • He can now do split squats (something that felt impossible before).

  • VMO squats? Check. A sign his knees are finally tracking properly.

  • Greater flexibility throughout his legs and hips.

  • Getting up and down from the ground is no longer a chore.

  • Confidence to move freely and play hard with his granddaughter.

“It’s so much easier to get around now. I don’t even think about my knees anymore.”

He’s not just moving better, he’s living better.

The Ripple Effect: Health That Strengthens the Whole Family

Here’s the best part: Randy’s transformation didn’t just impact him.

His wife Sherry started training too and her flexibility and pain levels have significantly improved. Now they’re biking and hiking together again, without the fear of one of them falling behind (or falling down).

They’re enjoying movement. Together.

The Takeaway: You Don’t Have to Settle for “Shaky”

Randy’s story is proof that even after serious knee injuries and years of frustration, you can rebuild your foundation. You don’t need to guess. You don’t need to suffer. You need the right movements, the right coaching, and a belief that your best days aren’t behind you.
